September 13 2023:
Medical Industry Visa Reforms
For our #healthindustry and #medicalindustry clients: The RACGP and the Government have introduced 2 main initiatives to simply visa processes to boost GP and medical workforce, which is critically experiencing a shortage.
1. #RACGP to simplify processes for international medical graduates; and
2. Cessation of the #Health Workforce Certificate (HWC) or a Health Workforce Exemption Certificate (HWEC), 13 Sep 2023, requirements as part of the visa process.
Both initiatives are welcome.
RACGP
In its media release, the RACGP has committed to “…making its assessment and accreditation processes easier for applicants, while maintaining safety and quality, as part of its response to Robyn Kruk’s interim report on regulatory settings for overseas practitioners.”

The simplification will ultimately result in #hospitals and the #healthindustry gaining confidence to workforce plan, and to include international medical personnel in those plans.
Cessation of Health Workforce Certificate (HWC/ HWEC)
The Australian government has ceased the “Visas for GPs” program, effective September 16, 2023.
The Visas for GPS Program required employers in the healthcare sector to secure either a Health Workforce Certificate (HWC) or a Health Workforce Exemption Certificate (HWEC) from a Rural Workforce Agency (RWA) when nominating doctors for specific occupations. These occupations include General Practitioner (ANZSCO 253111), Residence Medical Officer (ANZSCO 253112) and Medical Practitioners not classified elsewhere (ANZSCO 253999). With the program’s cessation, International Medical Graduates (IMGs) aspiring to work in primary care in Australia will no longer need to obtain a HWC for their visa applications. HWC applications close on September 5, 2023, and HWEC applications close on September 13, 2023.
