August 7 2025:
Expanded English Test options

From 7 August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs will expand the list of approved English language tests for visa applications. This update introduces greater flexibility and broader testing options, which may simplify the process for many visa applicants.

What’s Changed?

From 7 August 2025, the Department will accept results from the following English language tests (taken at a secure test centre):

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced (C1 Advanced)
  • CELPIP General
  • IELTS Academic and General Training, including One Skill Retake (OSR)
  • LANGUAGECERT Academic
  • Michigan English Test (MET), including Single Section Retake (SSR)
  • Occupational English Test (OET)
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)
  • TOEFL iBT

These expanded options give applicants more pathways to meet the English language requirements associated with their chosen visa.

Tests Taken before 7 August 2025*

If you’ve taken a test on or before 6 August 2025, the Department will continue to accept the following test scores:

  • Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE)
  • IELTS, including One Skill Retake (OSR)
  • PTE Academic
  • OET(for healthcare professionals)
  • TOEFL iBT

*You can use a test taken on or before 6 August 2025 as evidence of English proficiency for visa purposes until 6 August 2028, inclusive. This will depend on the visa. You must check what level of English you need and what evidence you must provide for the visa you want to apply for.  Obtain immigration advice.

Online Tests Not Accepted

The Department does not accept English test results completed entirely online (also referred to as ‘remote-proctored’ or ‘at-home’ tests).

Tests not accepted for visa purposes include:

  • CELPIP Online
  • IELTS Online
  • LANGUAGECERT Academic Online
  • MET Digital (at-home version)
  • OET\@Home
  • TOEFL iBT – Home Edition

Only tests undertaken at a secure test centre will be recognised for Australian migration purposes.

English Proficiency Levels Required

The required level of English proficiency depends on the type of visa you are applying for. The levels include:

  • Functional English
  • Vocational English
  • Competent English
  • Proficient English
  • Superior English

These requirements are specified in Australian migration legislation. It’s important to confirm the required level and acceptable evidence before submitting your application.

What This Means for Applicants

This is a practical development that broadens access for many migrants and skilled professionals. For those planning to lodge a visa application from August 2025 onwards, it’s worth reviewing which tests best suit your visa, circumstances and timelines.
